The Laura Ashley Collection is a collaboration between King Koil and Laura Ashley Home Accessories. The mattresses themselves are designed, engineered and made by King Koil under license from Laura Ashley, using her fashion fabric designs and styling. This is how King Koil described the collection:
A palette of designs by Laura Ashley ranging from traditional to contemporary have been perfectly captured in this unique collection, which features a variety of patterns that express the charm and refinement of this fashion legend. But beyond its visual appeal, each mattress has been expertly crafted to provide plush comfort and exceptional support, to ensure you of a totally restful night’s sleep. The pampering you want and the look you love—flawlessly combined in the Laura Ashley Beautiful & Smart Mattress Collection.
Laura Ashley, one of the world’s best-loved fashion and home furnishings brands, started from humble beginnings. In 1953, after attending an exhibition on traditional handicrafts at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, a young, unknown designer named Laura Ashley was inspired to make her own patchwork quilts. Unable to find suitable fabrics in the local shops of London, the enterprising artist decided to try producing her own. The Laura Ashley legacy continues with the Beautiful & Smart Collection - Quality crafted sleep sets designed for daily life.
The mattresses in the Laura Ashley Collection are King Koil mattresses with the features of King Koil foam and innerspring models. The 2013 Laura Ashley collections were Luxury and Elite. Also carried was a mattress pad, iAdapt, which is no longer available. The following descriptions of these are from 2013:
Luxury - King Koil calls this collection "Everlasting Elegance." They say, "The classic designs of Laura Ashley have been perfectly captured in this unique collection featuring elegant patterns that express the charm and refinement of the fashion legend. Each mattress is quilted in a pretty pattern from the renowned Laura Ashley® design archive." The surface fabric is treated with "Fabriclean™" to be anti-microbial. This is intended to inhibit the growth of bacteria, dust mites and fungus while reducing resultant odors. Fabriclean is said to safe for the skin.
The core support of the Laura Ashley Luxury mattresses is King Koil's "Contour Luxury Plus EC system." Spring coils are foam-encased individually for body conformity and motion transfer reduction. Conforming support is to be continued above the innerspring core with memory foam.
King Koil iFusion with its gel and open-cell structure is used to keep the Luxury mattresses cool by conveying body heat away from the sleepers.
Elite - King Koil calls the Elite collection "A Designer’s Palette," intended to make the owner feel "pampered." Again, it is King Koil engineering which makes these mattresses comfortable, while Laura Ashley fabric designs make them beautiful. Both the coils and the foam in the Laura Ashley Elite mattresses are zoned. The five zones correspond to the contours of sleepers' bodies, especially where the hips and the shoulders are concerned. The dual effect of this is to reduce pressure points and to keep the spine in proper alignment. The two principal kinds of foam used are memory foam and latex.
iAdapt - The advertised benefit of the Laura Ashley iAdapt mattress topper pad by King Koil is to "extend the life of your mattress." The iAdapt is two-sided, so it can be flipped when one side is worn. It can be buttoned down to keep it in place. And it is far less expensive to replace than the mattress. It also provides additional cushioning comfort.
The iAdapt is also engineered to enhance the comfort of the sleeper(s), utilizing some of the same features used in the Laura Ashley mattresses. These features are the Fabriclean treatment of the surface, iFusion, zoned support/comfort, and Excellent Edge™ Foam Encasement. Additionally, the iAdapt surface fabric employs Hydra-Performa™ fiber technology to manage moisture by wicking it away from the users.
Along with its other lines, King Koil updated its licensed Laura Ashley Brand of mattresses and mattress toppers for 2015. The new models' designations are Amani, Capri, Catalina, Leslie, and Sabrina. These models range in comfort levels from Firm to Ultra Plush. These innerspring mattresses are between 11" and 15" in height The manufacturer's suggested retail prices are medium to medium-high, but retailers' prices are often medium-low to medium. At the time of this writing, outgoing models are low-priced, making room for the newer models.
All of the 2015 Laura Ashley mattresses have quilted covers with a blend of silk and wool, the silk lending a smooth texture while the wool wicks moisture away and is temperature neutral. Not only the top but also the sides of these covers are quilted.
In the foam comfort layers, all of these models feature King Koil's Advanta Gel, a blend of highly resilient foam with gel. The resiliency of the foam is for cushioning support. This support is enhanced by the infused gel, which also absorbs heat and conducts it away from the surface for cooling.
Also common to the entire collection is King Koil Performance Foam, a high-density support foam. In Amani, the only firm model, the Performance Foam is extra-firm.
Other King Koil foams in the 2015 Laura Ashley mattresses are in certain models and not in others. Amani, Leslie, and Sabrina each have iFusion gel-infused memory foam, while Ultra Soft Perfect Contour Foam is found in Capri and Catalina. Amani has a layer of Visco Plus Memory Foam, while each of the others has Super Soft Foam Wave Foam. Amani and Sabrina each have a layer of Gel Response Latex, latex foam infused with gel, taking advantage of the resiliency of both component materials. The selection of foams with their individual thicknesses and densities determines the overall height and comfort level of each model.
The Laura Ashley 2015 mattresses use the King Koil Contour Elite Plus. This innerspring of individually encased pocket coils is configured into five zones to tailor support for five body areas: head, shoulders, torso, hips, feet. The independent response of the coils distributes support evenly to reduce pressure on the larger body parts and to support the vulnerable lower back. The zoning ensures needed support without increasing pressure for heavier areas. The benefit of zoning is confirmed by its widespread use among mattress manufacturers.
The bottoms of the pocket coil support units in the Laura Ashley mattresses are protected by a base pad of King Koil's Enhanced Balance Base Foam.
The pocket coil unit is enveloped by King Koil's Excellent Edge FE foam encasement. This protects the coils from the sides and ends of the mattress. It is also edge support for the sleeping surface to prevent edge sag and roll-offs. This makes the top of the mattress 100% usable.
Available for each of Laura Ashley's 2015 mattress models is King Koil's Natural Wood Foundation. This is a slatted wood box foundation covered with upholstery fabric to match or coordinate with the mattresses. These mattresses are also compatible with European wood slats, adjustable beds, and platform beds. Being pocket coil mattresses, traditional box springs are generally inadvisable. However, many retailers still call slatted box foundations "box springs" out of continued use of the term for foundations in general, so first ask what kind of foundation a "box spring" is.
Some retailers are still listing warranties of 20 or 15 years for Laura Ashley mattresses. However, the King Koil warranty on 2015 models is for 10 years non-prorated. Be sure of what the warranty on the mattress is before you buy it. Some retailers may be repeating the terms of the older warranties. Also, with some retailers using their own names for mattress models, you may be not immediately certain which model is which without asking.
Although the Laura Ashley Mattress Collection is still made and distributed, the mattresses themselves are not named or shown on the Laura Ashley Home or King Koil websites. However, it is briefly described by Park Place Corporation (PPC), a King Koil licensee, which has a description of the Laura Ashley Collection and lists eleven of its mattresses made by PPC. It also has an explanogram of a generic Laura Ashley mattress four colored radio buttons for descriptions of the major features: Quilt, Comfort, Edge, and Support.
The Laura Ashley Collection of King Koil mattresses is distributed widely throughout the United States and Canada, including in many local and regional chains of furniture stores. Model names do differ among retailers, as many chains or distributors have their own in-house designations. Among the firms carrying the Laura Ashley Mattress Collection are Park Place Corporation, The Bedworks of Maine, Art Van Pure Sleep Mattress Store, Cardi's Furniture & Mattresses, and Overstock. The lineups include both one-sided and two-sided mattresses. Many have gel lumbar support.
Most models have coils, and almost all of these are pocket coils. Coil density varies from 630 to over 1,000. Since these are basically King Koil mattresses with Laura Ashley fabrics and styling, expect them to be made in the U.S.A. and have foam encasement edge support. Depending on the models, they may have other King Koil features, such as temperature regulation with gel-infused memory foam, graphite-infused latex or memory foam, and micro-coils.
Two sources for overall customer response to mattresses in the Laura Ashley Home Collection are GoodBed and Sleep Like The Dead (STLD). GoodBed has ratings specific for the Collection and its models, but STLD has them for the whole King Koil mattress line.STLD
According to SLTD, “King Koil innerspring mattresses overall (including Laura Ashley) have 65% owner satisfaction.” This was “Based on 81 Actual Consumer Experiences.”
GoodBed has 182 ratings posted by owners of Laura Ashley Collection mattresses. GoodBed calculated the owner satisfaction rate at 80%, yet the average rating was 2.9 of 5 stars, 58%. At first, this does not seem to jive, but they are not exactly the same. The satisfaction rate is largely based on how many of the owners said they would recommend their Laura Ashley mattress to a friend. The distribution of ratings is:
|Stars||Number of Ratings||Percentage of Ratings||Attitude||Number of Ratings||Attitude Percentage|
We see here that over 38% of the ratings are neutral, while the numbers of positive and negative ratings are almost even. Some may have given their mattresses only 2 stars because of certain irritating issues, even if they found them satisfactory overall.
GoodBed also polls customers posting ratings on certain mattress issues. Owners of Laura Ashley mattresses rated theirs on four of these issues: Back Support, Pressure Relief, Sleep Quality, and Stays “Cool.” Their ratings on these issues averaged 2.9 stars, the same as the overall ratings. The average ratings were higher for Stays “Cool” and Sleep Quality, which may have had more influence than Back Support on whether they would recommend the mattress.
On the other hand, the 2.9 stars average rating (58%) is closer to the SLTD Owner Satisfaction Rate of 65% than GoodBed’s 80%. However, the STLD rating was based on the experiences of only 81 owners of King Koil mattresses, not just those of Laura Ashley Collection mattresses, so the best we can say is that the these two evaluations are not entirely the same.
If the Laura Ashley Collection mattresses were sold on Amazon, we’d get a better view of customer response.
