Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Layla Memory Foam Mattress

The two-sided memory foam mattress with copper-gel infusion

The two signature features of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress by Layla Sleep are (1) it is a two-sided mattress, and (2) its memory foam is infused with copper-gel.

Two-in-One

Flip Layla Mattress to Change Firmness

Two-sided mattresses were once common. When an entire mattress was filled with cotton batting, as was common before innerspring mattresses took over, frequent flipping and turning accompanied by beating to level it out was necessary to keep it in shape and comfortable, because the batting would compress in places and shift around, even with tufting.

The early innerspring mattresses were two-sided. The old Bonnell coils and offset coils had perimeter rods around the top and bottom rims of the innerspring array. Both top and bottom of the mattress had thin padding of fibers (cotton or polyester), and later of polyurethane foam. Flipping and rotating these mattresses made them last longer, because the padding was not always compressed in the same places. This gave the padding in those places time to recover.

Now two-sided mattresses are not as common. Innerspring mattresses have thicker padding – actually layers of foam. Putting this on both sides of the mattress makes it too high for some persons. Using shorter coils means less support. Also, adding more foam to the mattress makes it costlier. It also makes the mattress significantly heavier, therefore harder to flip. So having a one-sided mattress means that it costs less, is not too high, and is not too heavy.

There are some brands – such as Dynasty, Serta Perfect Sleeper, Spring Air Four Seasons, Restonic, and Brooklyn Bedding – which have two-sided (primarily innerspring) mattresses. What makes the Layla mattress stand out is (1) it is an all-foam mattress, and (2) it is only 10” high.

Layla Sleep’s co-founder, Akrum Sheihk, calls the Layla Memory Foam Mattress a “two-in-one mattress,” meaning that the customer can choose whether to have a soft (plush) mattress or a firm one by choosing which side is up. The Plank by Brooklyn Bedding also has a choice of firmness, but in that 11” innerspring model the choice is between firm and ultra-firm. A Good Housekeeping review, “The Best Mattresses to Buy Online in 2019, According to Textile Experts,” named the Layla Memory Foam Mattress as “Best Two-Sided Boxed Mattress.”

Soft & Firm tags

The firm and soft sides have covers of contrasting colors, dark for Firm and light for Soft. They are tagged on either side of the seam.

Copper-Gel Infusion

The memory foam in the Layla Memory Foam Mattress is infused with copper gel. This is not the only metallic gel in mattresses; some manufacturers use titanium gel (which is a phase-change material) in their foams.

Advantages of Copper-Gel Infusion

Layla Sleep cites three advantages of copper gel:

Thermo-Regulating     Firming Response     Anti-microbial
  1. Cooling – The chief advantage of metallic gels is that they are many times more heat-conductive than non-metallic gels. Layla Sleep has an animated image showing the beads of copper gel contacting each other where the foam is compressed, making a path to conduct the heat away from the sleeper.
  2. Support – Another advantage of the copper gel is enhanced support under compression. As the copper-gel beads are pressed together, they get firmer. This sounds like the action of coil springs, which have more resistance as they are compressed.
  3. Clean – The third advantage of copper gel is that it is anti-microbial (so is silver). The copper in the gel hinders the growth of bacteria and other microbes, making the foam and the mattress cleaner.

Mattress Construction

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress consists of four foam layers and two covers. All foams are certified by CertiPUR-US as free from toxic compounds. The mattress is made totally in the United States from American-made materials.

SOFT SIDE

Soft Cover Plush Polyester blend with Thermo-gel cooling agent. White & gray stitched pattern
Comfort Layer 3" Plush Copper-Gel Memory Foam
Transition Layer 2" Firm HD Polyurethane Foam
Support Core 4" Very Firm HD Polyurethane Foam
Comfort Layer 1" Firm Copper-Gel Memory Foam
Firm Cover Plush Polyester blend with Thermo-gel cooling agent. Black & gray stitched pattern

FIRM SIDE

Soft Cover

The covers of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress are zippered for easy removal to be cleaned. The fabric is a blend of 66% polyester, 30% viscose (Rayon), and 4% spandex, with a Thermo-gel material woven in. The Soft Cover has a stitched pattern of white and gray.

Soft Comfort Layer

The Soft Comfort Layer is 3” of plush copper-gel infused memory foam. This is deep enough for the sleeper to sink in enough for pressure relief.,/p>

Transition Layer

The 2” thick Transition Layer is made of firm high-density polyurethane foam. As the name implies, his transitions support from the Soft Comfort Layer to the Support Core. The surface is channeled for airflow for cooling.

Support Core

The Support Core is 4” of extra firm polyurethane foam. This is the base support for the entire mattress. One advantage of a foam support core is that it minimizes motion transfer so that one sleeping partner’s movements do not disturb the other.

Firm Comfort Layer

The firm comfort layer is copper-gel infused memory foam. Only 1” thick (⅓ the thickness of the Soft Comfort Layer) and directly over the Support Core, it has a firmer feel than its companion layer on the other side.

Firm Cover

The Firm Cover has the same composition as the Soft Cover, but the coloring is black and gray.
