Simmons Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection

Beautyrest logo

The Collection

Mattresses in the Simmons Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection are sold through Sears, Macy’s, and other retailers, both in stores and online. A sample of the model names in 2013 were Palm Springs, York Avenue, Madison Avenue, Oak Ridge, Park Hill, Angelique, Edmundson, Felicia, Classic Pemberton, Palisade Court, Elderberry, and New Generation, with mattress heights from 11" to 15.75", and prices generally in the $$$ range.

Shared Features

Within their diversity, there were features they had in common.

Support

Principal among these features wer Simmons Beautyrest pocketed Coil Springs, in which the springs are wrapped individually to respond more accurately to the shape of a sleeper's body. This was to provide relief from the soreness of pressure points and reduce or minimize the transfer of one sleeper's motion to the other sleeper. On at least some of the mattresses in this collection, titanium springs were used for a longer effective spring life.

Pocketed coils (also called Marshall coils after their inventor), were first patented in 1900. later, Marshall and Simmons developed machine production and assembly of the coils, making them more affordable. Beautyrest was coined as the brand name for this technology.

Foam Encasement

Another shared feature is the BeautyEdge™ foam encasement edge support system. This thick wall of foam encircles the mattress, holding the constellation of pocketed innersprings in place to ensure full support for the users. This is also to protect the mattress against failure, prolonging its life.

Convoluted Foam

Several of the mattresses in the Simmons Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection used convoluted foam in one of the comfort layers. This has two benefits. First, the convoluted side of the foam allows more air to circulate. This facilitates the dissipation of heat, which is important if memory foam is used, since memory foam tends to accumulate heat from the sleepers' bodies. Secondly, the convoluted surface of the foam makes it more responsive to the shape of the user's body.

Variable Features

The tops of Simmons Vanderbilt mattresses vary by model. Some of these types are Tight Top, Euro Top, and Pillowtop. Beneath the tops are different configurations of comfort layers as to materials, thicknesses, sequence, etc. This diversity is also found in the covers. What this means is that customers can select the mattresses which more closely meet their individual needs.

Special to Certain Retailers

Though the Vanderbilt name cannot be found on the Simmons website, they were offered at Sears and other retailers, with some of the descriptions having been posted in 2013.

2019 Update

Since the Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection was first reviewed on Beds.org 2013, there have been many changes in the Beautyrest lineup which also show in the Vanderbilt Collection. Beautyrest used to have several sub-lines, including Beautyrest (the basic line), Beautyrest Recharge, Beautyrest World Class, Beautyrest Silver, Beautyrest Platinum, and Beautyrest Black. Now it has just two series, Beautyrest® Hybrid and Beautyrest Black®. As other brands have done, Simmons Beautyrest has streamlined its lineup, and what were once separate models are now available variations of the listed models (series). A prime example of this is TEMPUR-Pedic’s realignment of their products.

Simmons Beautyrest still has contracts for the Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection with some retailers, notably Sears and Macy's. However, these retailers no longer list them under the Vanderbilt name. The Vanderbilt Home Collection, like the Vera Wang Collection, no longer includes mattresses.

This may be a consequence of the growth of online-only mattress brands coupled with the challenges facing traditional department store chains and the growth of online mattress reviews. Now it is to the benefit of brick & mortar retailers to make it easier for shoppers to compare mattresses online. Hiding behind different names and irrelevant changes in detail made comparing the same mattress at different retailers difficult – impossible for most. Now this works to marginalize those retailers who still use exclusionary tactics.

The current Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection consists of two series of Beautyrest mattresses, the BR800 and the BRS900 (BRS900 is the Beautyrest Silver Collection). Each of these has five variations/models named by their top-side construction and firmness level.

Besides Sears and Macy’s, Beautyrest Vanderbilt Collection mattresses (BR800 and BRS900) are also sold on Amazon and US-Mattress, as well as some other sites. All of these also list other Beautyrest mattresses.

Customer Response

The new Beautyrest Vanderbilt lineup is still relatively new. Therefore there are few customer reviews at this time. The same goes for the Beautyrest® Hybrid and Beautyrest Black® on both Beautyrest’s and retailers’ websites.

This is one of those mattresses that is not completely turnable and I think that adversely affects its durability. I would prefer a mattress that can be turned over.

I don't know because as we exchanged our labor packing their house for friends moving overseas in exchange for the almost new mattress and box spring.

Mattress Rating: 2 starsMattress Comfort: down

After about 2 years the mattress has depressed and faded where we two sleep on it. It has a visible hump in the middle where there is less use. It is beginning to have hard points like the coils pressing through.

I think there is a ten year warranty but I am not sure how it will go when I ask them to fix it. Replacement would be better. Overall I think the quality is poor as it doesn't last.
