Simmons Bedding Company

History of Simmons

from the Simmons website

For over 140 years, Simmons technology has been offering a better night’s sleep. In 1870 Zalmon G. Simmons built his first factory in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Simmons had originally manufactured wooden insulators and cheese boxes. In 1876, Simmons decided to change his entire business model and began mass producing woven wire mattresses.

In 1889 Simmons introduced spiral coil springs. Simmons' innovative manufacturing process dropped the price of the woven wire mattress from $12.00 to $0.95 cents.  This now made the mattress accessible to more people.

In 1900 James Marshall, a Simmons employee patented the wrapped coil spring. In 1912 Simmons introduced the Wall-A Bed the predecessor to the well known Murphy bed that Simmons produced for the Murphy Company. During World War II, Simmons answered America's military demands by manufacturing 2,700 different items including parachutes and bazooka rockets. In 1958 Simmons became the first mattress company to introduce both the King and Queen Size mattresses. Continuing their patriotism in 1980 Simmons became the Official Bedding Supplier of the Winter Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Today, Simmons has 18 manufacturing plants in the US and Puerto Rico, as well as 23 international licensees and sub-licensees.

Simmons Beautyrest Update (2015)

Simmons Bedding Company unveiled its unified Beautyrest brand at the 2015 Winter Market in Las Vegas. The strategy is to bring all the Beautyrest line under one banner, Beautyrest Recharge. This unification not only makes the Beautyrest World Class and Beautyrest Hybrid lines Recharge lines, but subsumes Beautyrest Black and Comforpedic under new names. Beautyrest Black is now Beautyrest Recharge Ultra and Comforpedic and Comforpedic IQ are Beautyrest Recharge Memory Foam Plus.

Simmons hopes this makes their brands less confusing to consumers by marking the separate lines as related. This is part of an industry-wide move to simplify branding with more descriptive names for collections, series and models.

The 2015 Simmons Beautyrest brand consists of four lines:
Beautyrest Recharge and Recharge Ultra
Beautyrest Recharge World Class
Beautyrest Recharge Hybrid
Beautyrest Recharge Memory Foam Plus

The first three lines feature Simmons' pocket coil technology, the basis of the Beautyrest brand since its inception. The 2015 models have a higher coil density, 800 for Recharge and 850 for Ultra. The coil density goes up to 1,000 in the World Class and Hybrid brands.

Other features include AirCool Foam and GelTouch Foam. Recharge Ultra adds AirCool Memory Foam as does Recharge World Class. World Class also introduces a new cover material, SurfaceCool Plus™ Fiber. Descriptions on the Beautyrest site reveal this as Tencel fibers perpendicular to the cover fabric to more effectively wick moisture away from the surface.

Recharge Hybrid Brand models have enough foam atop the pocket coil support unit to qualify these innerspring mattresses as hybrids. The foams include Beautyrest's AirCool Gel Memory Foam and AirCool Max Memory Foam. The selling point for the Recharge Hybrid line is that the two memory foams and the pocket coils combine their pressure-relieving properties.

The fourth new Beautyrest line, Recharge Memory Foam Plus, is the upgraded and renamed Comforpedic brand. Memory Foam Plus models are memory foam mattresses with high-density polyurethane support cores and memory foam comfort layer(s). Between the memory foam and the support core is a new material, the Engineered Gel Support Layer. Both the material itself and its shape lend themselves to its support and temperature moderating properties.

Simmons is also launched a new ad campaign in February 2015: Look Out World. This is a progression of the theme of the previous year's Beautyrest Recharge ad program, sort of an Act II, or as the press release said, it "transitions the focus from the Day Before to the Morning After."

The Beautyrest website has pages for Beautyrest Black, Comforpedic and Comforpedic IQ. This is probably to ease the transition to the one brand concept. The new models are already listed by major retailers, such as Sears. They will be seen more at other retailers as the 2014 models are sold down. Simmons still lists the BeautySleep and CUrV brands on its website.
