2014 Review

fixed_width_thumb.php.2014

As one of the leading mattress-selling categories, the Sealy Posturepedic line of mattresses includes a wide variety of models that offer varied types of construction, different firmness levels, and multiple types of padding. The mix-and-match approach to mattress construction appeals to consumers who seek unique mattress features. Many Sealy Posturepedic reviews stress the benefits of specifying mattresses designed to match individual body contours and sleeping styles. In addition, the Sealy Posturepedic approach to mattress construction allows consumers to find mattresses that fall within budget constraints.

The inner composition of Sealy Posturepedic mattresses can either include latex foam or memory foam. Latex foam possesses a higher level of breathability, while memory foam does a better job of evenly distributing body weight over the mattress surface. The mix now includes gel foam (memory foam infused with gel for cooling). Consumers who are unsure of which Sealy Posturepedic mattress to choose should first decide on the type of foam. From there, consumers can narrow their selection by looking for specific characteristics among the types of Sealy Posturepedic mattresses.

Sealy Posturepedic mattresses are divided into three rating categories: Good, Better, Best. With each step up the rating ladder, consumers can expect more features that enhance mattress quality, such as increases in mattress padding thickness. Consumers who shop for Posturepedic mattresses based on price can find a Posturepedic category that matches their targeted mattress expenditures. If memory foam is not essential and you prefer sleeping on firm mattresses, you can save money on Sealy Posturepedic mattresses rated Good.

Sealy offers three mattress series, which consumers often refer to as mattress lines. The line-up and content of these series have changed. Formerly they were Preferred, Reserve and Signature. The 2014 line-up, reflecting content, is Classic Series, Gel Series and Hybrid Series.

Benefits of Sealy Posturepedic Mattresses

Sealy felt so confident in the durability of their leading mattress line that the company offered 20-year warranties on many Posturepedic models. Beginning in 2014, Tempur-Sealy (including Sealy) now offers a straight 10-year warranty on all new products, full coverage with no prorated second period. However, many retailers offer extended warranties.

Mattress durability is how long a mattress retains its original structure to ensure the same comfort level. As the name implies, Posturepedic mattresses are designed in conjunction with renowned orthopedic surgeons to provide proper back support. According to Sealy, the Posturepedic design improves blood circulation, which results in a restful night’s sleep. Moreover, Sealy continuously develops state of the art mattress technologies that the company diligently tests before launching a new mattress line.

Here are some Sealy Posturepedic mattress innovations (2014) as described on the Sealy website:

CoreSupport Center™

One unique Sealy Posturepedic mattress feature is the CoreSupport Center. The proprietary mattress technology power packs the middle third of the mattress to improve support and prevent permanent body impressions. This mattress technology is one of the leading reasons why Posturepedic mattresses last longer than most other types of mattresses.

Titanium SS™ Coil System

Coil system technology mirrors the technology utilized to develop automobile shock absorbers. The level of body pressure absorption depends on the number of coils produced and where Sealy inserts the coils within the mattress. Sealy states the Titanium SS single coil system provides extensive body support.

Titanium DSx™ Coil System

As the most recent advancement in coil design, Sealy has announced that the Titanium DSx is the only single coil innerspring that provides dual stage conforming support. The dual support includes the mattress surface and underneath the mattress. This coil is now called the Posturepedic DS

Apex DS and Apex HS Coil Systems

Apex coils, DS and HS, are "dual support" coils which are pocket encased (as opposed to Bonnell, offset, and continuous coils). Because they respond independently, pocket coils conform to a sleeper's body contours. They also virtually eliminate motion transfer. For more information on coils see the Beds.org article "Spring to Sleep".

SolidEdge Edge System (formerly SitRight™)

Another patented Sealy mattress innovation increases the sleeping surface by up to 20 percent, depending on a bed’s dimensions. This SitRight Edge System integrates with the adjustable base foundation. Sealy promotes this system to reduce mattress bounce, improve body support, and augment stability.

StayTight™ Foundation

Most people move around on their mattresses during sleep. With that in mind, Sealy introduced a foundation that helps keep sheets secure and prevents the Posturepedic mattress from sliding on the mattress foundation.

LiftRight™ Surround Handles

One of the most difficult moving tasks involves mattresses. Sealy has mitigated this problem by introducing LiftRight™ Surround Handles. The company extols the unique wrap-around handle design that encourages easier gripping access, which makes moving a bed from one bedroom to another bedroom a less arduous task.

Adjustable Base

Sealy sells the Reflexion 4, an adjustable base that combines the benefits of Posturepedic mattresses with innovative Dual Massage. A wireless controller operates the bed base.

2015 Update

fixed_width_thumb.2015.php

The 2015 Posturepedic Series of innerspring mattresses by Sealy was introduced at the Winter Market 2015 in Las Vegas. The primary upgrade from previous Posturepedic models is the Sealy Embrace™ Coil replacing the Apex Coil. The new series with these redesigned wrapped pocket coils has a higher coil count than previous models. Variations of this coil system are found in the other new series in the 2015 Posturepedic line: Posturepedic Plus Series and Posturepedic Premier Hybrid Series.

The cover fabric of the 2015 Posturepedic mattresses is a "Durable knit fabric with spun yarns." Sealy says this provides "a soft feel next to your body." The fiber itself is not identified. This fabric is quilted to the fire-resistant material Flameguard™ and ½" of polyurethane foam.

The comfort layers of the new Posturepedic Series mattresses include foams such as Sealy's SuperSoft foam, and polyurethane foam. Types of foam, their firmnesses, and the number and thickness of the layers vary by model. Comfort levels range from very firm to plush, and overall heights from 11 to 14 inches, all determined primarily by the comfort layers.

Also included in the comfort section is a ½" layer of gel-infused memory foam in the center third of the mattress. Called the CoreSupport™ Center, this adds support to the middle portion of the body.

Around the Posturepedic Series 2015 mattress is the 2½" wide SolidEdge™ HD System. This girds the pocket coil innerspring to protect the coils, keeping these independent springs in place. It is also edge support for the sleeping surface, to eliminate roll-off and edge sag.

Mattresses in the 2015 Posturepedic Series have corner-wrap handles. Since the handles are at the corners, they make it easier to handle the mattress when moving or rotating.

Sealy Flat Floundation_5x7sealy bed frame

Sealy offers three foundations for use with 2015 Posturepedic Series mattresses. These include the Sealy Flat Foundation (a kind of platform) as well as the Reflexion Up and Reflexion 4 adjustable beds. The Flat Foundation can be placed on the Sealy PosturePedic® Bed Frame made by Mantua .

The new Posturepedic Series mattress models will become more widely available at retailers as the inventory of existing models is sold down. These mattresses are covered by Sealy with a 10-year non-prorated warranty.

2019 Update

sealy-pp-bed.original

There have been changes to Sealy® mattresses in the five years since the last update. For one thing, most mattress manufacturers have been streamlining their product lines, making it easier for shoppers to find and identify the kinds of mattresses they are looking for. This is in addition to the constant process of applying advances in technology and design to their products.

Posturepedic Technology

The signature feature of Sealy Posturepedic™ mattresses has been the Posturepedic Technology™. Orthopedic specialists helped develop it with Sealy engineers. Basically, it is providing additional support for the heaviest part of the sleeper’s body, the lower torso, hips, and upper thighs. This part of the body tends to sink into the mattress more, creating what is known as the “hammock effect” or “hammocking.” Picture a hammock with the middle part the lowest. The Red Hammock

This puts extra strain on the spine since it pulls it out of line. It is bad enough for lightweight back sleepers, but worse for heavyweight persons and side sleepers, and much worse for stomach sleepers. Adding support to the middle counteracts the hammock effect, allowing for a better sleeping posture. While Posturepedic Technology™ was the newest innovation in mattress design when first introduced, many mattress manufacturers now use some kind of zoning to contour mattress support to better fit the sleeper’s needs.

The method of added support in Posturepedic mattresses differs by the type of mattress in each of Sealy’s Posturepedic lines.

The Lineup

Sealy’s Posturepedic Series mattresses are now organized into three lines:  Response Line (innerspring mattresses), Conform Line (memory foam mattresses), and Hybrid Line (hybrid mattresses). Each line has three collections: Essential™, Performance™, and Premium™.

The Collections

In each of the Sealy Posturepedic collections, models progress from entry-level (simplest) to top-level (with the most features). A chart on the Sealy page for each line shows the features included for each collection.

Essential

This would seem to be essentially the simplest collection in each line. Sealy notes that these mattresses come at an “affordable price.” However, the distinction of this collection is that its mattresses do not have certain features the other two collections have.

The support in these mattresses is listed as “Standard.” This means that these models do not have the Posturepedic Technology. This keeps the price of the mattress down and more affordable. For very lightweight sleepers, this hardly makes a difference, especially if the mattress is firm or medium, but average-size sleepers and those who are heavier or larger may need the extra support, especially if the mattress is not firm and/or the user is a side sleeper.

The cover is also simpler, just a stretch knit fabric.

The comfort foams in Essential models is also not as advanced as those in the Performance and Premium collections.

In the Response and Hybrid lines, the kind of coils differs by collection, but in the Conform line, the support core is the same for each collection.

Performance

This is the middle collection. In each of the lines, some of the features are midway between those for Essential and Premium. This is so with the covers and the comfort layers, With the support core (base), Performance models have the same as the Premium ones.

Premium

As the name suggests, mattresses in the Premium collections are top-of-the-line for each of their lines. Consider these items:

  • Covers:
    • SupremeLoft™ Cover with MoistureProtect™ and AllergenProtect™ in Response Line,
    • Ultra-Stretch ComfortLoft™ Cover with Chill™ in Conform Line
    • ChillTech™ UltraStretch High-Loft Knit Bolder Colored Cover with DuoChill™ Technology & Allergen Protect™ in Hybrid Line.
  •  Top Layer(s):
    • SealyCushion™ Air Foam and SealyChill™ Gel Memory Foam in Response Line,
    • Sealy ComfortSense™ Foam and Sealy Chill™ Gel Memory Foam in Conform Line,
    • Sealy Immersion™ Advanced Memory Foam with Chill™ in Hybrid Line.
    • Sealy Immersion™ Advanced Memory Foam with Chill™ in Hybrid Line.

From these examples, we see that Sealy puts a premium on cooling with gel. This is the most common method of cooling for mattresses with memory foam. The next most common method is enhanced airflow, such as in TEMPUR-Pedic’s Breeze models and the Airflow Transfer System used in Selectabed, Tempflow, and Snuggle-Pedic mattresses.

The Lines

The three lines differ according to the type of support. The Conform Line has foam support, making them all-foam mattresses. The Response Line and the Hybrid Line have innerspring support. The difference between these two is the proportion of foam layers in the comfort section. In hybrid mattresses, this is a greater percentage of the overall mattress height.

Response Line

This is the innerspring mattress line. The Posturepedic Technology (in the Performance and Premium models) is a ½” layer of SealyCool Gel Memory Foam placed across the middle third of mattress either over the top layer or between the two top layers.

response-profile-cutaway.original

The innersprings are Response Pro Encased Coil System in the Performance Collection and Response Pro HD Encased Coil System in Premium models (both pocket coils), but the Response Coil System in the Essential mattresses appears to be offset coils.

Edge support in Essential mattresses is provided by foam rails on the ends and sides of the mattress. In the Performance and Premium models, it is the DuraFlex™ Edge System, a double row of narrow (therefore more tightly packed) coils around the perimeter of the pocket coil array.

Conform Line

The Sealy Conform Line consists of memory foam mattresses. The topmost gel memory foam layer is configured to have the middle third denser than the head and foot. This is done by perforating the end third sections and leaving the middle third unperforated.

The support core for all Conform Line mattresses is SealySupport Gel Foam (gel-infused polyurethane foam). Sealy does not state the density of this foam, but 1.8 to 2.0 lbs/ft³ is the industry standard.

Hybrid Line

Posturepedic Technology is at the bottom of Sealy Hybrid Line mattresses – literally. The middle third of the pocketed coil innerspring has 20% more coils. It is the greater coil density which increases support in this part of the mattress.

The support core in Sealy Hybrid Line mattress is encased pocket coils, Sealy Response Pro™ Encased Coils in the Essential Collection and the Response Pro Zoned HD™ Encased Coil System in the Performance and Premium collections. Edge support in the entire line is DuraFlex™ (described above).

Marketing

Except for the Cocoon by Sealy, their bed-in-a-box, Sealy does not sell its mattresses directly to the public. On the Sealy website, the “buy” button for mattresses in the Response, Conform, and Hybrid lines reads, “Find a Retailer.” In fact, at the top of the description of each line is the notation, “Exclusively at Sealy Retailers.” There are many retailers. Just a few are Sears, Macy’s, Mattress Firm, Amazon, Gardner-White, and US-Mattress. These mattresses are sold both online and in stores.

There are many model names with many models and variations. Some models may be customized for individual retailers, and therefore have different model names. The Essential Collection models in each line are not necessarily low mattresses. Some of the Essentials are high mattresses with several layers, including pillow tops and euro tops. What makes the difference between them and the other collections in each line are the features special for each collection, such as the kind of top foam or the cover. Sometimes the only way to know which collection – or even line -  a model on a retail website is in, is to open up the product description to see what is in it.

Warranty and Sleep Trial

Sealy has a 10-year full warranty on their mattresses. Except for the Cocoon’s 100-Night Trial, sleep trials are handled by the retailers. This may be because trial periods involve returns, and these are more easily and less expensively handled by local retailers.

Customer Response

According to Sleep Like the Dead (SLTD), owner satisfaction for the Sealy Response Line is “Fair-at-best.” On their chart, SLTD rates owner satisfaction for the Premium mattresses as C-, with D+ for Performance and D for Essential. The largest sample size (519) is for Performance, suggesting that this collection has the most sales. The next highest sample size is 211 for Premium. Together, these numbers indicate that consumers as a whole prefer mattresses with Posturepedic Technology™ over those that do not.<

span>

On SLTD, the Sealy Hybrid Line mattresses had a 1% owner satisfaction rate, third-highest of six high-priced brands/models following 81% for Tempur-Pedic and the Helix Luxe. This is lower than all the mid-priced and low-priced hybrids on the chart. Low-priced hybrids rated higher than mid-priced ones, and these average more than the high-priced hybrids. This indicates that owner satisfaction is influenced by owner expectations, which are higher for costlier products.
